Student Work Examples

Learning Goal: I can estimate the number of non-standard units needed for a given measurement task. (M02.04)

For this lesson, students participated in stations to estimate the number of non-standard units needed to measure objects around the room. Students worked together to estimate how many blocks were needed to weigh classroom objects such as pencils, water bottles, notebooks, and whiteboard erasers.

This activity sparked curiosity in the students, kept the students engaged, promoted collaboration, and allowed students to be hands-on with their learning.

Learning Goal: I can observe and describe changes in the appearance of an organism as it grows and develops.

Our grade 2 class received fertilized eggs from Agriculture Nova Scotia, along with the supplies to hatch baby chicks. The class learned about each stage of the life cycle, including completing a chicken journal, where students could observe and describe changes in the appearance and growth of the chick as it develops. On day 9, we candled the egg to investigate which eggs were developing. The students then drew their observations, along with a short description of the changes in the chick's development.

Throughout the observations and learning of the cycle of a chicken, we also read books, watched educational videos, and colored in a daily egg as a countdown.

Learning Goal: I can identify non-fiction text features (such as headings, diagrams, photographs, and bold letters)

Over a week, students learned about text features in non-fiction text. Each day, students would learn two new text features, engaging in group discussions, searching for and identifying non-fiction text features in non-fiction books with a group.

We also created a non-fiction text-notebook, with definitions and picture examples of each non-fiction text.

At the end, students completed a search and find of the text features they learned about. During this activity, students used their group members as well as their non-fiction text features notebook as a resource to complete the activity.

This activity promoted collaboration and was easily adaptable to meet all students' learning needs.
